Ring…!” The school bell rang and the children in the school dashed out of the school gate like thousand of birds fleeting out in the sky joyfully. I had waited at the school gate for my younger brother, John, to come out so as to ask him about his examination results.
No sooner, John came out of the school gate dragging his feet. I dashed to him and asked, “What is your result for the examinations?” He did not reply me and walked off. I was furious when he did not answer me.
When we reached home, John quickly ran into his room and locked the door. Out of curiosity, I strained my ears at the door to hear what he was doing but all I could hear was silence. Then I decided to leave him alone.
When it was dinner time, mum and dad came home after their long tiring day of work. I was elated to show my results to them. I went into my room and took my report book, just then John opened his room door and I saw that there was a piece of paper on his table. Curious, I picked it up and realized that it was John’s report book! He failed all the subjects.
I hurried, passed it to my parents and their hearts sank. I could see that dark clouds seemed to loom over John’s head. Soon, dad’s vein began to pop out of his neck as he looked at the report book in disbelief. Mum crossed her arms indignantly across her chest.
After some days, I could see that John’s eyes were bleary most of the time. I then realized that he had been engrossed in playing computer games. When dad found out about it, he banned John from playing the games. He lectured John for his bad habit.
Besides lecturing, dad started to help John in revising his work. After several weeks, John showed some improvement in his work. Dad promised that he would take us on an overseas trip if John would pass with flying colours.
John said that he was confident to score well in his next examination. After so much revision, the final examination arrived. With confidence, John stepped into the examination room.
After what seemed like eternity, the final examination was over. No sooner, the results of the examinations were out. John’s teacher, Ms Ang, brought all the exam papers into the class. Everyone in the class was so excited like loose fireworks.
When Ms Ang announced the highest mark for English, everyone’s heart missed a beat. “John Lim has the highest mark for English!” Everyone was shocked and their mouths were wide opened in disbelief. No one could believe what they had heard.
Ms Ang praised John for being the top in the class for English and a smile plastered across his face. When it was time to go home, John rushed out of the school gate and said to me that he scored the highest for English and said that he had A and had passed the other subjects too.
We were so elated that he walked home in high spirit and with a spring in his steps.
