“Scorching hot sun, prickly cactus…” murmured Kevin. He had been travelling in the desert for a few days. The scorching hot sun hung high in the sky, shooting its fiery hot rays on the ground. The lonely desert was dotted with a few cactus. Kevin trudged in the sand, his shoes were gritty and with a load of belongings, Kevin was extremely exhausted. Kevin’s forehead was dotted with beads of perspiration as he wiped some that wetted his clothes through. Kevin was already suffering from a ghastly heatstroke, it was obvious that he was desperate for a sip of water.
Soon, he walked to a watermelon orchard, the place was fenced up, and there was a wealthy looking person guarding the watermelons.“Hi, Sir! Can I have a slice of watermelon ?” He asked the man politely. Instead of a reply, the man flashed an arrogant face, totally ignoring Kevin. Kevin thought that he might be a little deaf. Kevin walked up to the man and asked politely again. “ These are rocks, young guy,” the man finally replied. He was a miser!
Kevin squinted in the sun, there was no doubt that they were watermelons! Being a quick thinking guy, Kevin asked the man, “Are you sure that they are rocks?” The miser nodded his head. “Why don’t you take two out to prove it? I am a rock specialist. They might worth some money!” Kevin told the miser. As the miser was a foolish man, he took two of the watermelons out. The miser then gave them to Kevin. “They are worth a lot of money… …”Kevin replied in a sly manner. Then, as quick as lightning, Kevin grabbed the watermelons, one in each hand and scooted off, laughing hysterically at the miser. The miser stamped furiously around his watermelon field that he smashed all the watermelons. He had to replant all the watermelons, feeling sad and angry that his efforts were all gone.
The miser learnt his lesson not to be stingy, or else one will bring misery to oneself.
